December is shaping up to be a busy month for immigration and trade legislation that impacts our industry. Land O’Lakes members can encourage passage of important legislation by taking just a few minutes to contact members of Congress, and by spreading the word among others in agriculture!
Here are two policy measures you need to know about:
Farm Workforce Modernization Act
The Farm Workforce Modernization Act was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by a bipartisan group of leaders, including Rep. Zoe Lofgren, Chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, and Rep. Dan Newhouse.
A one-page summary of the measure is available here. The bill would provide legal status to current agricultural workers and their families and reform the H-2A guest-worker visa program to permit year-round agriculture to participate, a crucial need for dairy.
This bill is tentatively slated to come to the U.S. House floor on Wednesday, December 11. Land O’Lakes members are strongly encouraged to contact Congress to support this legislation, using this easy-to-use online form. Sending a message takes just a few minutes, but it can make a huge difference!
Retail-owners are also encouraged to share this online form with your farmer-customers.
All of agriculture would benefit from a more stable agricultural workforce, provided by this legislation.
U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA)
An agreement on USMCA is likely to be approved this week and may be considered by Congress as soon as next week (the week of December 16).
Once a vote is imminent, an action alert message and an opportunity to contact Congress will be sent to Land O’Lakes members. Keep an eye out and help us to get this landmark trade agreement across the finish line!
