When people drive by a farm, what do they think about? The family who lives there? The food they produce? Sue Hess of Hessdale Farm in Pennsylvania wonders about this a lot. That’s what inspired her to partner with her local school district to help students get to know her family’s farm, through their lunch menu staples.
Through the partnership, students started making the connection that the farm next door provides the milk for their cafeteria favorites: Land O’Lakes macaroni n cheese, cheddar paninis, white chicken chili -- even Hershey’s chocolate.
Now, kids get excited about knowing where their food comes from. Per their food service director, Kelly Price, “I’ve never seen kids get so excited about butternut squash soup!”
